Only a Carpenter

(Taken from Come Ye Apart by J. R. Miller)

“Is not this the carpenter?”

Mark 6:3

Certainly; yet that refutes nothing. It only helps to prove the claims of Jesus to be the Son of God. If he had been a learned rabbi or philosopher, it might have been said that he had received His wisdom from men; but as he was only a poor village carpenter, he must have been taught of God.

There are other thoughts which this question suggests. It tells us how wisely Jesus spent his youth and early manhood — not in idleness, but in useful toil, no doubt helping thus to provide for His mother and her family. The example has its inspiring lesson for every young man growing up in the home of his childhood. He should make the years bright with earnest work and the conscientious use of every moment of time.

There really are no pictures of the Christ; yet there are on the pages of the evangelists pictures of the Christ in certain attitudes, which have their deep meaning for us. Once we see Him with a whip in …

Though He Slay Me

Three men from the Church were talking over lunch:

“I don’t know what gives with Harry. His situation just goes from bad to worse. Lay-off. Eldest kid caught in a gas-bar heist. Possible mortgage foreclosure. Sheesh!”

“He has always been a great help at the Church when asked.”

“Yeah, but there must be some inner darkness or rebellion or ignorance. He needs to take a tougher look at himself.”

John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
A great deal has been said about "One-Way Jesus". This refers to the second part of the passage. But let us look now at the former part.

I am the Way - If you watch how I live, move and operate you will have the key to successful living. Be humble, be helpful, be a good listener, be found in places of need, be forgiving, be full of good and reverent words about the Heavenly Father, be much in prayer.

I am the Truth - Gain the lessons from what I have said. Learn my ethic. Meditate on eternal reward and consequence. Place yourself in my parables. Heed my prophetic utterances. This will require a serious look at Matthew chapters 5, 6, 7, 13, 24 and 25. Also Luke chapters 10, 15 and 22.

I am the Life - I have something to give to you for the simple asking. It is not a creed or a subtle urging. It is rather the very life residing in me. It is meant to be distributed. It…
